Sean returned to Ireland to assume a consultant post at The Galway Clinic and also at Barrington’s Hospital. He did so after holding a consultant NHS post at two University Hospitals in Liverpool, UK (St Paul’s Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital & Alder Hey, Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital).
He was awarded a PhD from The University of Liverpool for his work on normal and abnormal visual development. He is the author of numerous academic publications and maintains research links with The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute (San Francisco, USA), The University of Liverpool where he holds an Honorary Clinical Lectureship and, Alder Hey Hospital, (Liverpool, UK). His special surgical interests are oculoplastics (plastic surgery of the eye & eyelids), paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (eye-misalignment, squints, abnormal visual development).

Background
Sean graduated with Honours in Surgery & Ophthalmology from University College Galway (NUIG) in 1992. He began his ophthalmic training in Waterford, Ireland in 1994 and progressed to The Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. He then undertook Higher Surgical Training in Ophthalmology within the dedicated and highly structured programme in Liverpool. Here he worked with internationally acclaimed ophthalmologists in Medical Retina (Prof. Simon Harding), Surgical Retina (Prof. David Wong), Glaucoma (Mark Batterbury, Peter Wishart), Paediatrics & Strabismus (Arvind Chandna, Ian Marsh).
He then devoted the next four years to research (PhD, University of Liverpool) and a clinical fellowship in Paediatrics and Strabismus with Mr Arvind Chandna at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK).
After his PhD work he undertook an intensive Fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery and thereafter re-located to The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, San Francisco, USA. Here he undertook a Paediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship (Dr. William Good, MD) and further post-doctoral research (Dr. Anthony Norcia, PhD).
He returned to a consultant ophthalmic post in Liverpool UK where he practised Oculoplastic and Paediatric Ophthalmic surgery from 2005 – 2008 before commencing his current post.

Surgical Expertise
As a Consultant Oculoplastic and Paediatric Ophthalmic surgeon in both adult and paediatric university hospitals of Liverpool, Sean amassed considerable experience in the treatment of routine (cataracts) as well as complex ophthalmic disorders, especially those related to plastic eye surgery and squints (misalignment of eyes). Sean is a member of The British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS) and also specializes in thyroid eye disease management.

Some of the procedures he performs in adults and children:

Cataract Extraction and Intraocular Lens Implant (children and adults)

Blepharoplasty (surgery for excess eyelid skin and fat)

Ptosis correction (droopy lid correction for adults and children)

Haemangioma excision (vascular eyelid lumps presenting around birth)

Eyelid tumor excision and reconstruction (e.g. basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma)

Entropion surgery (in-turned lids and lashes)

Ectropion surgery (out-turned lids and lashes)

Correction of watery / sticky eyes (dacryocystorhinostomy and intubation in children and adults)

Botulinum Toxin for aesthetic (wrinkles) and clinical reasons (blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, aberrant regeneration post facial nerve palsy, crocodile tears)

Strabismus Surgery and Botox for horizontal, vertical or torsional squints (surgery and botulinum toxin is used commonly for the re-aligment of eyes squinting because of eye-nerve palsy, thyroid eye disease, trauma or when associated with ‘lazy eye’ in childhood)

Many of the more common eye disorders are also managed by Mr Chen such as Glaucoma, Diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD).

Juvederm, Restylane® and Laser / Light-based therapies (Lumenis) to face, neck and hands are also used for rejuvenation and facial contouring (cheek lift, chin ptosis etc) by Mr Chen as complementary to other plastic procedures.
